VGT opts for a sustainable approach

VGT was founded in 2004 when two families joined forces. They started with 7 hectares and since 2007 the company has 15 hectares of greenhouses for red bell peppers, equipped with cogeneration, flue gas cleaners and solar panels. In the high season, they can count on the daily efforts of about 65 employees. The harvested bell peppers are brought to the warehouse in self-propelled harvesting containers, where they are sorted according to quality, size and weight and packed in Flandria boxes of 5 kg. Every day, 3 to 5 lorries leave for the auction. Sales are handled entirely by BelOrta, where the bell peppers are marketed the next day under the Flandria label.

Quality water

Koen Neyens : "Rainwater is the best water for our plants, it is collected and stored in water basins with a capacity of 40,000 m³ of water. The surplus feed water is fully collected, disinfected and reused."

VGT

Energy

"Furthermore, we invested in cogeneration. Part of the electricity is used in the greenhouse, the balance is injected into the grid. The cooling water from the engine heats the greenhouse. The flue gases released during combustion are 100% purified. The released CO2 is used as fertiliser for the bell peppers."

Biological control

"We grow bell peppers according to the Flandria quality mark. This integrated cultivation method means that diseases are controlled as much as possible with natural enemies. This way, 90% of the diseases can be controlled."
